"Minnedosa" is a Sioux word that translates as flowing water. Appropriately named, as the town of Minnedosa lies nestled in a valley carved on the prairie landscape some 13,000 years ago by the rushing melt waters of the last great ice age.
Minnedosa nestled in a beautiful little valley, with a lake and campground close at hand. Summer or winter you will find active community members energetic in activities around town - camping, sailing, fishing, golfing, walking, jogging, horseback riding, skidooing, tobogganing, ice fishing or attending rodeos, rock concerts, picnics in the park or enjoying a sleigh ride - you name it, we've got it! This is truly Manitoba's Valley Paradise.
Minnedosa is a welcoming community, always inviting new businesses as well as new people. Here is a community that is built on a foundation of trust and values. The strength of this community is the people who live in and around it, always friendly and welcoming. If you're vacationing, visiting or moving into our area, you are welcome. We know you will find a friendly smile and warm greetings!
Minnedosa is located 210 kilometers northwest of Winnipeg, the province’s capital, and 50 kilometers from Brandon, the Westman Region’s largest center.
Minnedosa’s beginnings were in the early 1870’s when John Tanner developed a stopping place along the Carlton Trail at a crossing of the Little Saskatchewan River. The stopping place known as “Tanner’s Crossing” soon attracted hundreds of settlers as they passed through on there way west. In 1879, the first bridge was built over the river and Tanner’s Crossing was soon forgotten. The town of Minnedosa was officially incorporated in 1883.
The jewel of the community is Lake Minnedosa, created by a dam and spillway on the Little Saskatchewan River. Conservation officials and groups to aid fish over the dam in their migration routes constructed Home of Manitoba’s longest fish ladder, the 600-foot structure was constructed by conservation officials and groups to aid fish over the dam in their migration routes.
